Outline Description of Module
This module equips students with the necessary terminology and practical skills for the linguistic description and analysis of text that is the basis of applied and topic-specific language studies. The module will cover the basics of phonology, grammatical structure and clause semantics from a theory-neutral perspective.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Describe the meaningful phonemic consonant and vowel distinctions in English
- Identify the basic patterns of the English Intonation system
- Classify the main word classes in English
- Analyse a clause in terms of its constituent parts at various ranks
- Critically evaluate ideas, arguments and empirical research
- Sustain a critical argument that is responsive to the particular conventions of the genre
How the module will be delivered
The module will be delivered through a mix of large group and small group sessions, including, where relevant, asynchronous materials such as lecture recordings. Full details on the delivery mode of this module will be available on Learning Central at the start of the academic year – and may be, in part, determined by Welsh Government and Public Health Wales guidance.
