Outline Description of Module
In this double module we read selected Hindu texts in Sanskrit. The course provides an introduction to the translation and interpretation of classical Indian religious texts, and familiarises students with some of the technical vocabulary used in Indian religious and philosophical discourse. Realistically, students should only consider this Texts module if they have achieved a pass at 60% or above in the elementary part of the course.
On completion of the module a student should be able to

a) to offer translations of previously prepared passages from Sanskrit texts,
b) to demonstrate some familiarity with the range of grammatical forms, syntax and vocabulary taught,
c) to offer some analysis of the content;

b) to demonstrate familiarity with the range of grammatical forms, syntax, metres, and technical vocabulary taught,
c) to analyse and comment on the content with an understanding of its significance for the wider history of Indian religions or culture.
