Outline Description of Module
This module aims to provide students with knowledge of key translation methods and skills, ranging from specific translation techniques to wider skills in text analysis and terminology mining. It also develops students’ understanding of translation technology, using leading CAT tool SDL Trados Studio, and offers an introduction to professional aspects of translation practice.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Critically appraise terminological resources and select solutions in an informed and effective way (LO1).
- Apply technology in translation and evaluate the effectiveness of a range of technological resources (LO2).
- Comprehensively analyse wide range of translation methods and apply them to a variety of text types (LO3).
- Critically reflect on translation research and methods (LO4).
- Discuss professional aspects of translation practice (LO5).
- Work as part of a team to demonstrate the development of relevant skills (LO6).
- Apply the training gained on the module to any specialized fields and any language pair (LO7).
How the module will be delivered
The module will be delivered through a range of interactive teaching sessions supplemented by online teaching and learning activities and materials where appropriate.
Weeks 1-4 and 9-10 will be 3hr-long interactive lectures, which variously involve group-based exercises, discussions, and Q&As.
Weeks 5-8 will be translation-technology workshops (2hr) supplemented by online resources, which are vital in enabling you to keep practicing with these tools independently.

Reassessment
You may be required to resit one or more of the assessments in this module if you fail the module. The Examination Board will advise you which assessments you need to resit during the August resit period. Resit assessments that are not supported by extenuating circumstances will be capped at the pass mark applicable to your programme.
