Outline Description of Module
With this module students will improve their translation skills between Spanish and English (ENG<>SPA), with respect to texts of a literary and journalistic nature. The module covers topics relating to aspects of Spanish and English-speaking culture. It also deals with topics of contemporary relevance and with contemporary varieties of the language.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Express the original meaning of journalistic and literary texts through translation into English and Spanish.
- Generate grammatically correct and linguistically accurate texts in English and Spanish through translation.
- Combine lexis and syntax in a correct, appropriate and stylistically sound manner in English and Spanish.
- Manipulate English and Spanish language in order to best transfer contextual meaning from the source language.
- Produce clear and concise explanations of difficulties encountered during the translation process.
How the module will be delivered
The module will be delivered through a range of interactive teaching sessions supplemented by online teaching and learning activities and materials – and may include, where relevant, asynchronous materials such as lecture recordings. Full details on the delivery mode of this module will be available on Learning Central at the start of the academic year – and may be, in part, determined by Welsh Government and Public Health Wales guidance.

- Display a comprehensive understanding of basic translation methods and tools applicable to journalistic and literary texts.
- Produce formative translations of short journalistic and literary texts.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of translation tools and resources.
- Demonstrate skills of communication and reflection through participation in seminars and forum.
- Demonstrate comprehension of grammar, lexis, syntax and cultural context of both English and Spanish.
