Outline Description of Module
This module builds upon the linguistic knowledge acquired at A-Level stage or equivalent. It integrates a number of key cultural issues with a deepening study of the structures, vocabulary and sounds of the language. Students will manipulate information from spoken and written texts in the Target Language: indicatively, translation, summary and commentary.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
Understand the gist of spoken language in a wider range of registers, delivered at normal speed, also films and television programmes in the TL.
- Engage confidently in conversations relating to everyday topics.
- Read and understand the main ideas in authentic texts in a variety of contemporary genres (indicatively, e-mails, newspapers, textbooks and literature) without too much effort.
- Write articulate texts with a fair degree of accuracy in order to communicate information, ideas, concepts and opinions relating to a variety of situations and topics.
- Use more complex grammatical structures and appropriate vocabulary
Academic and key skills developed include learning, research and organizational skills; communication and IT skills; intercultural awareness and interpersonal skills.
How the module will be delivered
The module will be delivered by a series of 3 seminars per week over 20 weeks in Semester A and S.

- To improve the knowledge of the TL through listening and comprehension exercises

- To develop the understanding of social and cultural aspects of the TL
- To develop the skill of translating short passages from the TL into English (and, when possible, from English into the TL)
- To develop a basic awareness of key translation problems and techniques
- To develop transferable skills

Test 1 - 1 hour - 15% - throughout the course

Aural Test - 45 minutes - 10% - Spring semester
Oral Exam - 10 minutes - 20% - Spring semester
Exam - 2 hours - 40% - Spring exam period

Syllabus content
The course focuses on the study of the complex sentence, indirect speech and on the practice of the four linguistic skills in order to reinforce the grammar studied in class; understanding and reporting of written and aural material; aural and oral training and practice through the use of a wide range of audio/video materials both for class teaching and independent learning.

It is essential that all students have an Italian-English, English- Italian Dictionary in hard copy.
A number of contemporary narrative texts and films will be used for the conversations classes. The titles of narrative texts and films will be given during the first lesson.
