The module is based around practical approaches to translation from German into English. Students will work with texts from a variety of sources and registers, including novels, newspaper articles, promotional literature and discursive essays. Students will develop their translation skills through individual and group projects and will practice both long-scale reflective translations and short, time-pressured exercises, in order to develop a range of important skills. Students will receive oral and written feedback on their work and their progress. Translation activities will be framed by discussion of relevant translation theories. 

1. Demonstrate greater skills in translating a range of texts, including prose, poetry, newspaper articles, critical materials, dialect
2. Produce high quality individual translations, with a focus on fluency, accuracy, register and fluidity
3. Work on short, time-pressured exercises, and longer, reflective tasks
4. Critically reflect on practical exercises using translation theory.

The module will be delivered through a range of interactive teaching sessions supplemented by online teaching and learning activities and materials – and may include, where relevant, asynchronous materials such as lecture recordings. Full details on the delivery mode of this module will be available on Learning Central at the start of the academic year – and may be, in part, determined by Welsh Government and Public Health Wales guidance.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR REASSESSMENT IN THIS MODULE:

Students who fail the module will be reassessed through the one synoptic re-assessment  (One translation weighted at 100%). Resit assessments that are not supported by extenuating circumstances will be capped at the pass mark applicable to your programme.

Students will be provided with a range of texts drawn from journalism, contemporary and modern literature and promotional literature. These will be available via the virtual learning environment (Learning Central), which will also include links to relevant websites.
