Outline Description of Module

The module aims to provide you with knowledge of a range of methodological steps to translate different types of complex general texts and specialised texts. It will include practical translation seminars, where you will translate from the source language — Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish — into English, and interactive lectures where you will be introduced to text type and genre analysis, editing and revision, as well as practising linguistic and stylistic analysis at an advanced level. Due to its practical nature, this module will be assessed with 100% coursework. 

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  1. Analyse a variety of complex translation problems and critically evaluate translation strategies, working with a range of text types, genres and topics;
  2. Apply knowledge of textual analysis, translation strategies, and text types to translate and edit complex texts;
  3. Critically evaluate and effectively use a range of resources and tools for translation and editing;
  4. Reflect critically on your own translation and editing practice, drawing on relevant concepts and literature;
  5. Revise, edit and present your work according to professional standards.

How the module will be delivered

The module will be delivered through a range of interactive teaching sessions supplemented by online teaching and learning activities and materials – and may include, where relevant, asynchronous materials such as lecture recordings. Full details on the delivery mode of this module will be available on Learning Central at the start of the academic year – and may be, in part, determined by Welsh Government and Public Health Wales guidance.  

We will deliver interactive lectures in English (one hour per week), drawing on examples from English and other languages. In addition to that, we will hold one-hour seminars, where you will work on translating specific types of texts from your source language—Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese or Spanish—into English. This will be supplemented by your homework tasks and reading.

Reassessment

Students who fail the module will be given the opportunity to sit a synoptic reassessment of 3,000 words (100%) during the August resit period.
