Outline Description of Module

The module explores a range of different theories and principles of translation.

Structured around key concepts and moments in the development of Translation Studies as a discipline, this course will explore the evolution of translation as a concept, a product and a practice as well as considering the role of the translator in society and in history.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  1. Demonstrate awareness of the range of definitions and approaches describing translation.
  2. Evidence an understanding of key principles of translation theory
  3. Apply translation principles to different types of texts in your language pairs

 

 

How the module will be delivered

The module will be delivered through a range of interactive teaching sessions supplemented by online teaching and learning activities and materials – and may include, where relevant, asynchronous materials such as lecture recordings. Full details on the delivery mode of this module will be available on Learning Central at the start of the academic year – and may be, in part, determined by Welsh Government and Public Health Wales guidance.  

Students are expected to prepare readings and to contribute actively to discussions in seminars. Essential preparatory reading will be provided on Learning Central.

Students will receive continuous feedback throughout the module. There will be specific preparatory sessions on group presentation and essay writing.

Skills that will be practised and developed

  • The module will develop your capacity to absorb information and apply relevant concepts to analyse language and translation-related problems;
  • Seminars will also enhance your capacity to read critically and present your views to a group or class;
  • The group presentation coursework will help you develop teamwork skills as well as organizational and time-management skills associated with carrying out independent work;
  • The essay coursework will also enable you to practise and develop your ability to produce high-quality writing in English and ICT skills.

THE OPPORTUNITY FOR REASSESSMENT IN THIS MODULE:

Students who fail the module will be reassessed through the one synoptic re-assessment (2,500 words essay (100%) during the resit period. Resit assessments that are not supported by extenuating circumstances will be capped at the pass mark applicable to your programme.
