Outline Description of Module
This course offers an overview of the methods and activities used in English Language Teaching. It supports students in developing their own resources and activities, and writing lesson plans for teaching. Students will have the opportunity to design new teaching activities and write their own lesson plans.
The module allows students to build on their own linguistic knowledge of English and support students in developing the skills to teach this knowledge to others.
The module will allow learners to develop further skills, particularly those who may wish to teach English in the future.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Outline and compare the principals of different teaching methodologies.
- Discuss new developments and technologies in TEFL.
- Identify ways of teaching different aspects of the language: phonetics, lexis and grammar.
- Research modern techniques of teaching the four language skills: speaking, listening, writing and reading.
- Create and present a new language learning resource that evidences engagement with new technologies and presentation techniques in TEFL.
- Develop a lesson plan that demonstrates knowledge of strategies for structuring a lesson as well as new developments in teaching different aspects of the language.
How the module will be delivered
The module will be delivered through a range of interactive teaching sessions supplemented by online teaching and learning activities and materials – and may include, where relevant, asynchronous materials such as lecture recordings. Full details on the delivery mode of this module will be available on Learning Central at the start of the academic year – and may be, in part, determined by Welsh Government and Public Health Wales guidance.
