Outline Description of Module
This module provides a practical introduction to the world of business in a Spanish speaking country. It focuses on key organisations such as companies as well as important issues such as advertising, marketing and the wider economy. It also offers valuable training in the preparation of business correspondence and CVs in the Spanish language.
Links with other modules: this module builds and develops on the practical skills the students learn in ML0279 Ex Advanced Spanish language) and prepares students for the Year Abroad by immersing them in a module totally taught in Spanish. The module also has links to sister modules in German (ML7283) and French (ML6283).
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Effectively understand the organisation and workings of companies, of the wider economy and of issues such as marketing and advertising in Spanish-speaking countries.
- Apply linguistic competence and powers of analysis with which to deal competently with most communication in Spanish within the business organisation.
- Critically assess key aspects of the business world in Spanish.
- Present written arguments, at the appropriate linguistic level, in a logical and coherent manner in relation to different aspects of the Spanish business world.
- Deliver a presentation on a topic related to the world and language of business Spanish by creating a company.
How the module will be delivered
The module will be delivered through a range of interactive teaching sessions supplemented by online teaching (flipped lecture) and learning activities and materials.
Students are expected to undertake independent study, completing homework and guided study ahead of seminars and class activities.
This can include any of the following:
Negotiating skills, problem solving and comprehension exercises, business correspondence, group presentations and job applications. You will develop considerably your knowledge of business vocabulary in Spanish.

- Individual work - 6 hours per week

Skills that will be practised and developed
- Learning activities will develop the student’s capacity to absorb information, including through note-taking;
- Seminars will develop the capacity to deploy this information and apply it to texts drawn from the world of business in Spanish speaking countries as well as regularly practising Spanish;
- Seminars and coursework will enable students to develop their vocabulary, improve their writing skills in a range of areas (letters, emails, reports, CVs etc.), improve their listening, speaking, and, in some cases, presentation skills in Spanish;
- Through coursework and examination students will demonstrate their knowledge of the world of business in Spanish speaking countries;
- Other academic and key skills developed include research and organisational skills, communication and basic word-processing skills, intercultural awareness as well as interpersonal, negotiation and team-working skills.
How the module will be assessed
The method(s) of assessing the learning outcomes for this module are set out in the Assessment Table, which also contains the weightings of each assessment component.
You will be assessed through a different array of assessments that will focus on the learning objectives for this module. You will have a class test at the end of the first semester and a group oral exam focusing on the creation of a company in Spain following some parameters given in the instructions to the exercise. There will also be two items of coursework focusing on formal writing in Spanish (business letter and essay), research and present ideas based on a scenario (essay) and a reading comprehension of a business text.
THE OPPORTUNITY FOR REASSESSMENT IN THIS MODULE:
You may be required to resit one or more of the assessments in this module if you fail the module. The Examination Board will advise you which assessments you need to resit during the August resit period. Resit assessments that are not supported by extenuating circumstances will be capped at the pass mark applicable to your programme.
