Outline Description of Module

This module provides an opportunity to undertake, with supervision, a piece of project work relevant to the student's scheme of study.

A range of projects will be offered to students. Some projects will require the student to engage in a study of mathematical theories or techniques in an area of current interest. Other projects will be centred on specific problems that require the formulation and development of a mathematical model.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

1.     undertake a programme of work, without unduly close supervision, meeting agreed targets that are appropriate for the particular project

2.     manage time, achieving appropriate targets in accordance with an agreed schedule

3.     provide documentation of the work undertaken, and compile this together in a written report or portfolio that conforms to agreed guidelines

4.     make a short oral presentation of the work and/or respond in a competent fashion to both specialist and non-specialist questions about the nature of the work.

How the module will be delivered

Modules will be delivered through blended learning. You will be guided through learning activities appropriate to your module, which may include:

  • Weekly face to face classes (e.g. labs, lectures, exercise classes)
  • Electronic resources that you work through at your own pace (e.g. videos, exercise sheets, lecture notes, e-books, quizzes)

Students are also expected to undertake self-guided study throughout the duration of the module.

Skills that will be practised and developed

Syllabus content

A range of projects will be offered to students. Each student will be assigned a particular project, taking due account of their individual preferences and proposed programme of final year studies.

Some projects will require the student to engage in a study of mathematical theories or techniques in an area of current interest. Other projects will be centred on specific problems that require the formulation and development of a mathematical model.

Project supervisors will specify the project in some detail and will provide guidance to the student in tackling a well-defined series of tasks.  Some of these tasks may be such that the more able student will be expected to complete them whereas the less able student may not.
