Outline Description of Module

An ability to apply tackle new and unfamiliar problems is an essential skill for a mathematician, both within their degree and beyond.  This module will provide students with opportunities to apply their existing knowledge, and undertake further research, to solve in tackling previously unseen problems.

Students will use results from algebra, analysis and other areas together with mathematical reasoning skills and appropriate problem solving strategies to investigate unfamiliar, open-ended problems spanning a range of topics.

A large part of this module involves working collaboratively with others and presenting your group’s ideas, either verbally, in written form, or as a formal presentation. Students will therefore develop their written, oral, time management, and communication skills as well as their ability to work as part of a team.

It is important to note that, like real life, there may often be more than one way to tackle a given problem, with some methods being more elegant or efficient than others. The solution process may also involve various assumptions and approximations, which also need to be assessed and justified as part of your work.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Select and apply appropriate methods to solve unfamiliar problems, and subsequently defend and discuss their approaches.
  • Prepare and deliver clear reports, both in writing and orally
  • Work effectively as part of a group
  • Undertake independent research

How the module will be delivered

Modules will be delivered through blended learning. You will be guided through learning activities appropriate to your module, which may include:

  • Weekly face to face classes (e.g. labs, lectures, exercise classes)
  • Electronic resources that you work through at your own pace (e.g. videos, exercise sheets, lecture notes, e-books, quizzes)

Students are also expected to undertake self-guided study throughout the duration of the module.
