MA2303: Vibrations and Waves

School Cardiff School of Mathematics
Department Code MATHS
Module Code MA2303
External Subject Code 100400
Number of Credits 10
Level L5
Language of Delivery English
Module Leader Dr Usama Kadri
Semester Autumn Semester
Academic Year 2022/3

Outline Description of Module

The module will treat the following subjects: mechanical vibrations and waves, simple harmonic oscillators & simple harmonic motion, superposition, forced vibrations and resonance, coupled oscillations and normal modes, vibrations of continuous systems, reflection and refraction, phase and group velocity.

Prerequisite Module: MA1301 Classical Mechanics

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Set up proper equations of motion and boundary conditions for applied problems.
  • Apply separation of variables, and superposition to solve the wave equation in various domains.

How the module will be delivered

Modules will be delivered through blended learning. You will be guided through learning activities appropriate to your module, which may include:

  • Weekly face to face classes (e.g. labs, lectures, exercise classes)
  • Electronic resources that you work through at your own pace (e.g. videos, exercise sheets, lecture notes, e-books, quizzes)

Students are also expected to undertake self-guided study throughout the duration of the module.

Skills that will be practised and developed

Skills:
Appreciate the principles of mechanics of vibrations and waves in 2 and 3 dimensions.
Use methods of separation of variables to solve problems in incompressible, compressible domains.

Transferable Skills:
Recognise, formulate and solve real-world problems in various domains.
