Outline Description of Module

Module content

This module provides a work placement with a host institution/company and constitutes a structured period of work-based learning outside of the University. Placement learning has been shown to help postgraduate students develop their professional competence as translators and proofreaders, revisers, editors, project managers, etc. In addition students generate a wide range of generic work related skills such as problem solving, analytical and critical thinking, team working, communication skills, personal development skills, planning and organisational skills, in a work environment and benefiting from mentoring and support from experienced professionals. On this module, the student will undertake a set of translation tasks (up to 2,500 words in the source texts) defined by the host institution/company and agreed with Cardiff University. Academic supervision will be provided in the form of tutorials and academic support by a named placement supervisor, prior to, during and after, the placement.

·         have acquired the skills to participate in the effective operation of a professional translation environment;

·         be able to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in the pre-requisite modules to a practical context;

·         be able to reflect critically on his/her own translation practice;

·         understand how to deal with complex and confidential information in a professional manner;

·         be able to demonstrate enhanced skills in using translation tools in a professional environment;

·         be able to communicate effectively with the full range of stakeholders in a professional translation environment;

·         have acquired first-hand knowledge of the administrative and commercial issues encountered in the professional translation environment;

·         have developed a high level of professionalism in relation to client care, the clear presentation of ideas, and organisational skills.

How the module will be delivered

DURATION

35 hours in situ. Depending on such factors as students’ personal circumstances, the geographical location of the placement and the placement providers’ requirements, placements may be completed in the form of a single working week or over a series of weeks on a ‘day release’ basis.

How the module will be assessed

Placement evaluation questionnaire: 30%.

Report: 70%.
