Outline Description of Module
This module aims to present the central importance of translation in the evolution of human cultures and to promote understanding of the sociological dimensions of this role in European history. Themodule explores how translation helps to build the cultural identities of five major European countries with examples from literature, philosophy, theatre, religion and politics.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- identify the methods and principles of translating and their variations in different periods and societies
- perceive translation practices in Europe in their historical context
- analyse historical contexts regarding translation practice
- understand history-related issues of translation in Europe
- demonstrate analytical skills in relation to historical and sociological contexts.
How the module will be delivered
Teaching is by 5 fortnightly lectures/seminars in the second semester
How the module will be assessed
Assessment comprises of one formative essay plan and one essay of 3,000 words.
