Outline Description of Module
The module examines the development of the European Union as a security actor within and beyond its borders.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Explain the evolution of the EU as a security actor
- Analyse strengths and weaknesses of the EU’s key security policies
- Assess the interplay between the EU as a security actor, national security policies and changes in the international system
How the module will be delivered
Lectures – provide orientation to subject matter
Seminars – designed to enable students to deepen understanding through subject-specific individual and collaborative tasks
Skills that will be practised and developed
Presentation skills, group-work, adaptability, synthesising significant quantities of material, understanding and explaining contending perspectives, individual research.

- Changing context of European security for the European Union
- Development of the EU as a security actor, including move from civilian power Europe to an entity possessing limited military tools
- EU security tools and instruments
- Key EU security policies: including enlargement, strategic partnership with Russia and approaches towards the Balkans, Mediterranean and Eastern Europe.
