Outline Description of Module

Students on this module will complete an 8,000 word dissertation. They will complete the module with one-to-one supervision from an assigned supervisor. The subject of the dissertation will be in the field of Politics and agreed with the supervisor. This module is an excellent opportunity for the student to shape their studies, to specialise in an area of particular interest to them and to develop key research, and presentation skills.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

·         define a research topic;

·         structure a scheme of research in Politics;

·         categorise and utilise data;

·         utilise primary and secondary sources;

·         reach considered conclusions on the basis of the available evidence;

·         write a carefully constructed dissertation with a valid conclusion;

·         work with minimal supervision.

How the module will be delivered

Tutorials at which research and writing objectives are set, research strategies and findings discussed, and draft dissertation chapters considered.

Skills that will be practised and developed

Defining a research topic, planning a scheme of research, categorising and utilising data from primary and secondary sources, tracing logical connections and identifying faulty logic, drawing valid conclusions, clear and concise writing, and independent working.

How the module will be assessed

The dissertation of not more than 8,000 words constitutes 100% of the final mark.
