Outline Description of Module

The module evaluates the artistic and ideological contribution of Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975), widely regarded as Italy’s most influential post-war intellectual. As well as outlining Pasolini’s eclectic career as poet, novelist, film-maker and political essayist against the background of post-war Italian history, the course will focus on specific questions of social conflict such as the 1948 political elections, the students’ revolt of 1968 and the explosion of political terrorism in the 1970s.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

·         Demonstrate an understanding of critical methods and make informed critical judgements on specific literary, cinematographic and politically-related works by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

·         Present critical analysis in a sophisticated and coherent fashion.

·         Develop the ability to analyse, expound, challenge and defend ideas on post-war Italian society and its development.

·         Account for the development of film as social commentary in Italian society.
