Outline Description of Module

This module will build upon the language skills learnt in the first three years of the degree programme, and apply them to the translation of a variety of texts from German into English, playing particular attention to lexical and grammatical accuracy, register, style and questions of idiom and expression.

For Erasmus students, this corresponds to level C1/C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

·         Critically reflect upon their own use of English and German

·         Write grammatically accurate German and English

·         To familiarise with different types of texts (e.g., business, technical, scientific, legal etc…)

·         Display a wide-ranging lexical and grammatical knowledge of English and German

·         Translate texts from German, demonstrating awareness of target language audience, register and style

·         To develop transferable skills

·         To enhance the lexical and grammatical range of the student.

How the module will be delivered

Teaching, learning and assessment are designed to enable you to achieve the learning outcomes described above. The aim of this course is to enable the students to work on the language through translation from German at level 6. The students will improve on the translation skills of the language and also about the cultural context in which it is used. While part of any class is likely to involve direct teaching, the emphasis is on student participation and students will be expected to take part actively in discussion and in tasks like, indicatively, small group and pair work, role play, and individual or group presentations. The class will be taught in the TL in most instances.

·         Writing grammatically accurate German and English

·         Display a wide-ranging lexical and grammatical knowledge of German and English

·         Word processing/presentational skills

·         Critical awareness of and ability to analyse differences in register and style in different types of written passage aimed at different audiences

·         Translating texts from demonstrating awareness of target language audience, register and style

                ·         Other key skills developed include learning, research and organisational skills; communication and IT

                 skills; intercultural and interpretation skills

                ·         Developing awareness of different registers and text typology in German and English
