Outline Description of Module

This module is intended for students with no or little existing knowledge of French. It is designed to introduce the language in its oral and written from; almost entirely taught in French and only occasionally through the medium of English, students will practice the four sections required to effectively learn a language: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

 On successful completion of the module a student will be able to:

   express their views in writing in a more complex style.

  • understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
  • deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
  • produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

How the module will be delivered

3 contact hours per week;

 -1 hour French situations, vocabulary and role- play , (hotel, restaurant, university, travel, future plans….)

-1 hour French situations ,same as above, but through individual audio-video exercises

-1 hour Grammar

In the 2nd semester introduction of French History and Society alternately with  French situations during the 1st hour

 Independent learning and practise should be at least 3 hours per week.

Skills that will be practised and developed

-To develop and encourage communication with French speakers;

-to develop awareness of register at a simple level (tu and vous);

-to develop the understanding at a basic level of French society and culture;-to produce basic texts in the target language.

4 WRITTEN TEST 40% (comprising of a reading comprehension and grammar exercises/translation)

-CHAPTER 1- 9 OF FRENCH 1, PALGRAVE FOUNDATIONS, comprising different daily situations.

-coverage of grammar: present, past, future, conditional, present subjunctive, pronouns, word genders, adjectives.
