Outline Description of Module
If you are thinking of learning Irish and only want to study for 10 credits this is the ideal place to start. After 10 weeks study you will be able to engage in basic conversation, compose elementary written texts and understand and interpret elementary written texts.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
Knowledge and Understanding:
- demonstrate knowledge of basic sentence structure;
- demonstrate knowledge of sufficient vocabulary to enable them to engage in basic conversations covering a range of specific topics and functions;
- understand elementary written texts in Irish;
- understand some of the basic phonetics of the Irish language.
Intellectual Skills:
- analyse basic Irish syntax;
- interpret and compose elementary written texts.
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- use sufficient vocabulary and sentences effectively in both the written and oral media.
Transferable Skills:
- engage in basic conversation;
- compose elementary written texts;
- understand elementary written texts.
How the module will be delivered
- workshops: to introduce and explicate new material;
- practical classes: to consolidate material and use structures and vocabulary in group work and individual study;
- formative assessments: to regularly consolidate the students’ knowledge through oral, aural, reading and writing exercises in class and private study.
