Outline Description of Module
If you are thinking of learning Welsh and want to study for 20 credits this is the ideal place to start. This module introduces basic vocabulary and sentence structure in both the oral and written media. After completing this module you can continue your studies by following Welsh 2. METHODS OF TEACHING: Workshops and practical classes.

Knowledge and Understanding:
- demonstrate knowledge of basic sentence structure;
- demonstrate knowledge of a sufficiently broad vocabulary to enable them to engage in conversations covering a range of topics and functions;
- interpret basic written texts in Welsh;
- understand some of the basic phonetics of the Welsh language.
Intellectual Skills:
- analyse basic Welsh syntax;
- interpret and compose basic written texts.
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- use sufficient vocabulary and sentences effectively in both the written and oral media.
Transferable Skills:
- engage in basic conversation;
- compose basic written texts;
- understand basic written texts.
How the module will be delivered
- workshops : to introduce and explicate new material;
- practical classes: to consolidate material and use structures and vocabulary in group work and individual study;
- formative assessments: to regularly consolidate the students’ knowledge through oral, aural, reading and writing exercises in class and private study.
Skills that will be practised and developed
This module is primarily concerned with the acquisition of a basic command of Welsh to enable students to understand and communicate in both the oral and written media covering a range of specific topics and functions.
