Outline Description of Module

To critically appraise different types of leader and leadership style

To undertake personal management self perception inventories and to critically appraise their usefulness for the professional workplace

To explore current contemporary management and leadership theory and apply theoretical approaches to leadership to the professional workplace.

To examine how people make leadership and management decisions in a variety of different work-based situations.  

On completion of the module a student should be able to

Knowledge and Understanding:

Throughout the course, participants will be able to undertake a number of practical exercises which will enable them to understand the key strategic priorities for those with leadership/management roles, to identify their own time management challenges, to understand different leadership and management styles and to examine the impact of these styles on others.

At the end of the course participants will be expected to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their own management style and to improve their ability to lead and motivate as well as identifying areas for future personal development

Intellectual Skills:

To communicate effectively in a management situation

To apply leadership and management theories to their own situations

To critically review through assignment, presentation, case study analysis and self study opportunities for continuous improvement and positive change

Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

To better manage processes, resources and projects in practical ways

To be able to review and plan more effectively their own continuing leadership and management development

To enhance practical leadership skills and improve confidence whilst drawing on the support of others within their learning environment

Transferable Skills:

To more effectively lead and manage a range of different types of people, finances and resources  in different situations within the professional workplace

How the module will be delivered

The course will provide a variety of teaching and learning tools including case studies, leadership and management self perception inventories, lectures and seminars to provide a blended mixture of learning opportunities for each participant
