Outline Description of Module
This course looks firstly at the employment relationship and the contract
of employment. Issues of rights and duties, termination of employment,
health and safety and the role of trade unions are then explored before putting the subject into a practical context by looking at tribunal procedure and the role of the Employment Appeal Tribunal.
On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Explain the statutory requirements of a contract of employment
- Identify the relevant provisions of the Equality Act 2010
- Discuss the role of trade unions
- Evaluate the significance of European Law in contemporary Employment Law and Practice
- Describe the procedure for taking an action to an employment tribunal and beyond.
How the module will be delivered
How the module will be delivered
Lectures – to explain the main points relating to the subject matter to be studied. Question and answer sessions – to ensure knowledge and understanding (it is anticipated that these sessions will be both tutor and student led). Discussion – to enhance the development of knowledge and understanding by exploring the main points in more depth. Research – to collate information from a variety of sources relevant to the identified topic.

Skills that will be practised and developed
Knowledge and understanding to enable the student to describe and explain the main points covered during the course and participate in a group discussion. Intellectual skills to allow the student to develop their own learning through reading and research of the topics under study and consider current debate and reforms and apply relevant law to given situations.

The potential for reassessment in this module
Students will have the opportunity to re-submit further assignment questions (these will be set separately if necessary following unsuccessful completion of the original questions set) for up to one month following completion of the course. A re-sit end of unit test will be available for the same period.
