Outline Description of Module
This is a post A-level module for students who intend to use Spanish for the purposes of work or further study. This module is designed for students who have an A-level in Spanish or equivalent (includingSpanish Language E - CE4095).In addition to developing these skills the student will develop a familiarity with current affairs in the Spanish-speaking world via up-to-date broadcast and written materials. The course is entirely conducted in Spanish and is supported with authentic materials. At the end of this module, students should be able to sit one of the DELE examinations (held every May at the Centre).
METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops ii) Self study including use of digital language laboratory.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 20% ii) Reading comprehension 20% iii) Oral assessment 30% iv) Aural end test 30%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Read advanced materials in Spanish and use the materials for his/her own purposes
- Operate effectively in simulated business situations: presenting, summarising, arguing a case, negotiating: including telephone skills
- Listen to and/or view authentic broadcast materials with an increasing level of comprehension
- Translate accurately into English from written sources in Spanish appropriate to this level.
How the module will be delivered
This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks and is conducted in Spanish.

Intellectual Skills - integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- demonstrate their ability to express themselves fluently and maintain a lengthy conversation in the target language on a wide range of topics.
- demonstrate their ability to construct a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects , expressing points of view at some length.
- demonstrate their ability to understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating a certain distinction of style.
- understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly.
Employability Skills: - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,
- to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies

Syllabus content
Wide range of topics including Spanish cities; Spanish people and their characteristics; Spanish Festivities; Spanish Traditions; Education and Immigration.
Grammar: students will revise major grammatical points as and when necessary ,with an emphasis on further practise of articles; Ser/Estar; Preterite; prepositions; present and imperfect subjunctive.
