Outline Description of Module

This module is designed for students who have completed a GCSE in Spanish or equivalent or who have completed Spanish A and B (modules CE4091 & CE4092). A period of revision of basic language skills and knowledge will be followed by training in the skills of speaking, listening and reading.  Students with an 'A' level in Spanish are not permitted to take this module.
 

METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops ii) Self study including use of digital language laboratory.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 20%, ii) Reading comprehension 20%, iii) Oral assessment 30%, iv) Aural end test 30%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Communicate orally in Spanish in most predictable survival, social and study situations
  • Use communicative strategies to help cope with unpredicted learning situations
  • Demonstrate understanding of Spanish spoken at normal or near normal speed in a variety of situations
  • Have a sufficient grasp of syntax to use 3 tenses with confidence, although perhaps not always accurately
  • Read longer passages of prose of a non-technical nature and demonstrate understanding of both gist and detail
  • Use all equipment in the laboratory appropriate to his/her learning style

How the module will be delivered

This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks.

Skills that will be practised and developed

Intellectual Skills            - integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.

 Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

  • demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in everyday situations,
  • demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions
  • collect information from short texts in the target language. 

Employability Skills:      - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,

                                    - to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies

Syllabus content

  • Revision of essential functions, notions, lexis and syntax

  • invitations; future plans; accepting, refusing, apologising
  • health issues, giving advice
