Outline Description of Module
This module is designed for students with no knowledge of the Spanish language who wish to acquire the basics of the language for social, survival or study purposes. The primary focus will be upon the skills of speaking and listening, but some attention will be given to reading skills. Students with a GCSE in Spanish are not permitted to take this module.
METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops ii) Self study including use of digital language laboratory.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 20% ii) Oral end test 30%/continuous assessment 10% iii) Aural end test 40%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Communicate orally at a basic level in Spanish in given survival, social and study settings.
- Demonstrate understanding of spoken Spanish at basic level in survival and study settings.
- Demonstrate some competence in basic syntax
How the module will be delivered
This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks
Skills that will be practised and developed
Intellectual Skills - integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in everyday situations,
- demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions,
- collect information from short texts in the target language.
Employability Skills: - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,
- to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies

Syllabus content
- Introduction to basic elements of lexis, syntax and phonology

Oral/Aural practice in a range of appropriate language functions e.g.
- Greeting/leave taking
- Giving personal information re: name, age, nationality, occupation etc
- Asking for information/directions/prices in a variety of appropriate settings
- Basic numeracy in Spanish
- The “cultural briefing”: aspects of Spanish society (eg civilisation, economics, politics) considered important for the student traveller in Spain - presented as reading or aural comprehension passages
- Reading comprehension at a basic, survival level (signs, menus, basic correspondence)
