Outline Description of Module

This course is aimed at students who have studied Japanese for over 2 years part- time, who wish to further progress their active and passive language skills. METHODS OF TEACHING: Weekly two-hour workshops. METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) class test (40%) ii) coursework (20%) iii) oral continuous assessment (40%)

On completion of the module a student should be able to

 

  • demonstrate their ability to understand the gist and some detail of short authentic texts in common genres by adequately completing listening tasks.
  • show their ability to extract information, ideas and opinions relating to everyday situations and topics by adequately completing reading tasks.
  • show their ability to initiate and maintain conversations and simple discussions relating to most everyday contexts, applying correct grammar and syntax, by taking part in role-plays and similar learning tasks.
  • Show their ability to reproduce hiragana, katakana and high level  kanji by writing short texts.

How the module will be delivered

 Students will actively participate in dialogues, group discussions and other interactive language exercises. Tapes and authentic work-sheets will enhance students active and passive language learning.

 Intellectual Skills:

  • integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.

 Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

  • demonstrate their ability to communicate at a level which is sufficient to get by in  practical situations whilst sustaining a dialogue in Japanese.
  • demonstrate their ability to construct short connected written texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
  • express opinions and ideas with some grammatical accuracy in spoken and written form.
  • demonstrate their ability to describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes    and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

 

Transferable Skills:-

  • to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group.
  • to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies.

 

 

How the module will be assessed

 Written class test (20%)  to test students ability of understanding simple texts and produce written responses

Coursework (20%) to test students ability to write texts and apply a range of  vocabulary  for social situations

Oral continuous assessment (40%) to test students ability to produce oral dialogues Japanese

Aural class test (20%) to test students understanding of Japanese.

Syllabus content

 

  • Topics will include: expressing conditions, obligations and possibilites; listening to TV and audio tapes on Japanese culture and current issues of modern Japan.
  • grammar and writing exercises to include higher level kanji.
