Outline Description of Module

This course is aimed at students who have a simple knowledge of Russian, who wish to further improve their communication skills in oral, aural and written form.

METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework (40%) four pieces of text production
ii) Written class test (20%) iii) Oral continuous assessment (20%) iv) Aural class test (20%)

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • demonstrate their comprehension of moderately elaborated spoken texts relating to a variety of everyday situations and topics by completing listening tasks.
  • show their ability to extract information, ideas and opinions relating to everyday situations and topics by adequately completing listening tasks.
  • show their ability to initiate and maintain conversations and simple discussions relating to most everyday contexts, applying correct grammar and syntax, by taking part in role-plays and similar learning tasks.
  • show their ability to translate short texts from English into Russian and vice versa.

How the module will be delivered

This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 24 weeks.

Skills that will be practised and developed

Intellectual Skills                       -    integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study. 

Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

-     demonstrate their ability to communicate at a level which is sufficient  to cope with practical needs whilst sustaining a dialogue in Russian.

- demonstrate their ability to construct short written texts in order to communicate information on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.

- express opinions and ideas with some grammatical accuracy in spoken and  written form 

Employability Skills:      - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,

                                            - to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies
