This module is designed for post A-level students or students who, although they may not have completed an A-level (or equivalent) have nevertheless maintained their language skills by an extended stay in Italy or by courses of study. The module further develops the language for work and study skills of Italian Language D (CE3094).   The course is entirely conducted in Italian and is supported with authentic materials.

METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops ii) Self study including use of digital language laboratory.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 20%, ii) Reading comprehension 20%, iii) Oral skills: meeting (simulation)/interview 30%, iv) Aural end test 30%.

• Participate in a (simulated) meeting in Italian presenting a particular case or opinion
• Read authentic documents in Italian and comment upon their content by responding to spoken or written questions about the document in the target language.
• Listen to and/or view authentic documents in Italian (e.g. radio or television broadcasts) for the purposes of gist or detailed comprehension
• produce a clear, well structured, detailed text on complex  subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and adhesive devices by writing essays or other forms of text production

This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks.

Intellectual Skills                       -    integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study. 

Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

1. demonstrate their ability to express themselves fluently and maintain a lengthy conversation in the target language on a wide range of topics.
2. demonstrate their ability to construct a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects , expressing points of view at some length.
3. demonstrate their ability to understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating a certain distinction of style.
4. understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly. 

Employability Skills:      - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,

                                            - to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies

• Oral/aural skills development with regard to social, economic and political issues of Italy  
• Current affairs via materials collected from television, radio broadcasts, newspaper/magazine articles etc.
• Topics will include education in Italy, the Italian economy, Italian cities and cultural issues
