Outline Description of Module
This course aims to introduce students who have no knowledge of Russian to basic communication skills. The emphasis will be on spoken Russian, but some written skills will be taught.
METHODS OF TEACHING: Weekly two hour workshops.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Aural class test 40%, ii) Oral class participation 40%, iii) Coursework 20%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to
- demonstrate their ability to recognise familiar words and very basic phrases by taking part in role plays and similar learning tasks
- demonstrate their ability to understand the gist and extract information of basic texts by adequately completing listening tasks.
- demonstrate a knowledge of basic grammatical structures and phrases by writing short texts and/or translating basic sentences.
How the module will be delivered
This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks.
Skills that will be practised and developed
Intellectual Skills - integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in everyday situations,
- demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions,
- collect information from short texts in the target language.
Employability Skills: - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,
- to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies

Syllabus content
- Introduction to basic elements of lexis, syntax and phonology

Oral/Aural practice in a range of appropriate language functions e.g.
- Talking about yourself and your family - The Russian alphabet
- The “cultural briefing”: aspects of Russian society (e.g. civilisation, economics, politics) considered important for the student traveller in Russian speaking countries - presented as reading or aural comprehension passages
- Reading comprehension at a basic, survival level (signs, menus, basic correspondence)
- Grammar:
pronounciation – voiced and voiceless consonants ; vowel “O”
personal pronouns; gender of nouns
possessive pronouns; forming questions
present tense
plural of nouns
