Outline Description of Module

In this course students will practise real life situations/dialogues to achieve a higher level in communication with Japanese people.  Students will expand their written skills, vocabulary and understanding of the structure of the Japanese language.  

This course will enable students to build on their basic knowledge of Japanese by improving their reading, writing and speaking skills. It also aims to give a further insight into the traditions and society of modern Japan. 

On completion of the module a student should be able to

Knowledge and Understanding:  

  • demonstrate their ability to hold a simple conversation/dialogue  in Japanese relating to areas of immediate concern by taking part in simple class conversations.
  • show their ability to understand simple conversation/dialogues in Japanese by completing listening tasks.
  • show their ability to write and read Hirgana, Katakana and basic Kanji characters by completing reading  and writing tasks.

Intellectual Skills:   

  • integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.

 Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:  

  • prepare and produce simple spoken dialogues in Japanese
  • produce simple written sentences
  • completing work-sheets showing the comprehension of simple spoken texts/dialogues  

How the module will be delivered

Students will actively participate in dialogues, group discussions and other interactive language exercises. Tapes and authentic work-sheets will enhance students active and passive language learning.

24 contact hours – interactive language work-shops

compare and contrast cultural differences between Japan and the UK

How the module will be assessed

Class test (40%)  to test students ability of understanding simple dialogues and produce written responses

Coursework (20%) to test students ability to write simple sentences and use simple vocabulary 

Oral continuous assessment (40%) to test students ability to produce oral dialogues in Japanese
