Outline Description of Module
This course is aimed at students with no previous knowledge of the language. Students will learn to understand basic written and spoken texts, taking part in simple conversation and conveying simple information in writing.
METHODS OF TEACHING: Weekly two-hour workshops.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 40%, ii) End of class test 20%, iii) Aural class test 20%, iv) Oral class participation 20%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to
Knowledge and Understanding:
- demonstrate their ability to recognise familiar words and very basic phrases by taking part in role plays and similar learning tasks.
- demonstrate their ability to understand the gist and extract information of basic texts by adequately completing listening tasks.
- show their ability to use basic phrases and sentences by talking about themselves, their family and everyday life.
- demonstrate a knowledge of basic grammatical structures,phrases and characters by completing written tasks.
How the module will be delivered
Students will actively participate in dialogues, group discussions and other interactive language exercises. Tapes and authentic work-sheets will enhance students active and passive language learning.
48 contact hours – interactive language work-shops

Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in everyday situations
- demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions
- collect information from short texts in the target language
Transferable Skills:- to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group
- to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies
This module aims to provide students with a grounding in the basic grammatical structures of Portuguese in order to communicate at a basic level in essential social and survival situations in Portuguese speaking countries. Students will learn basic grammatical structures and characters to be applied in four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
How the module will be assessed
Coursework (40%)four pieces of text production to teast written skills.
Written class test (20%) to test students ability of understanding basic texts and produce basic written language
Oral continuous assessment (20%)to test students ability to produce basic oral dialogues in Portuguese
Aural class test (20%)to test students basic understanding of familiar day to day life
