Outline Description of Module
This module is designed for students who have completed a GCSE level in German, or equivalent and who have maintained their language skills either by a stay in a German-speaking country or by a course of study. The focus of this module is upon the applied use of the language in work or study. At the end of this module, students should be able to sit the Goethe Institut examination A2. Students with an 'A' level in German are not allowed to take this module.
METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops ii) Self study including use of digital language laboratory.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 20%. ii) Reading comprehension 20%. iii) Oral end test 30%. iv) Aural end test 30%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to
- demonstrate the ability to understand the gist and some detail of short authentic texts in common genres by adequately completing listening tasks.
- show the ability to extract information, ideas and opinions relating to everyday situations and topics by adequately completing reading tasks.
- show the ability to initiate and maintain conversations and simple discussions relating to most everyday contexts, applying correct grammar and syntax, by taking part in role-plays and similar learning tasks.
- demonstrate the ability to construct short connected written texts on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
- express opinions and ideas with some grammatical accuracy in spoken and written form.
How the module will be delivered
This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks.
Skills that will be practised and developed
Intellectual Skills - integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in everyday situations,
- demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions,
- collect information from short texts in the target language.
Employability Skills: - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,
- to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies

Syllabus content
- Revision and development of syntax
- Introduction to business lexis and register
- Reading comprehension using a range of authentic sources, newspapers, magazines as appropriate
- Oral/aural practice including a presentation and role play.
- Telephone skills
- Talking about holidays; food and drink and environmental issues.
