Outline Description of Module

 This module is designed for students with a little knowledge of German: perhaps one year at a school or module CE2091 German Language A. The primary focus will be upon the skills required for oral communication in social, survival and study situations. Some attention will be given to reading and basic writing skills will be introduced.  At the end of this module, students should be able to sit the Goethe Institut examination A1.  Students with a GCSE in German are not permitted to take this module.

METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops ii) Self study including use of digital language laboratory.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 20%. ii) Oral end test 30%/Continuous Assessment 10%. iii) Aural end test 40%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Communicate orally at a basic level in German in given survival, social and study settings.
  • Demonstrate understanding of spoken German at basic level in survival and study settings.
  • Demonstrate some competence in basic syntax.

How the module will be delivered

This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks.

Skills that will be practised and developed

Intellectual Skills                       -    integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study. 

Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

  1. demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in everyday situations,
  2. demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions,
  3. collect information from short texts in the target language. 

Employability Skills:      - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,

                                    - to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies

  • Revision of basic elements of lexis, syntax and phonology
