Outline Description of Module

This course covers Hiragana to enable students to read Japanese. A wider range of grammatical structures and expression will also be taught. METHODS OF TEACHING: Weekly two-hour workshops. METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Written class test (20%), ii) Coursework (20%), iii) Oral class participation (40%), iv) Aural test (20%).

On completion of the module a student should be able to

 

  • demonstrate their ability to recognise familiar words and basic phrases by taking part in role plays and similar learning tasks.
  • demonstrate their ability to understand the gist and extract information of basic texts by adequately completing listening tasks.
  • demonstrate a knowledge of basic grammatical structures and characters by writing short messages and/or translating basic sentences. 

How the module will be delivered

 

Students will actively participate in dialogues, group discussions and other interactive language exercises. Tapes and authentic work-sheets will enhance students active and passive language learning.

24 contact hours – interactive language work-shops

 Intellectual Skills:

  • integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study .

 Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

  • demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in basic everyday situations.
  • demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form using basic vocabulary and formulaic expressions.

 Transferable Skills:

  •  to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group
  •  to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies

 

How the module will be assessed

 Coursework (20%) to test students ability to write basic texts and apply vocabulary  apropriate for everyday life situations

Class Test (20%) to test students ability to read and understand basic texts.

Oral continuous assessment (40%) to test students ability to produce oral dialogues in Japanese

Aural class test (20%) to test students understanding of  basic Japanese conversations

Syllabus content

Topics will include: asking and giving permission; describing situations; making decisions; expressinf comparisons, conditions, experiences and obligations.

Revision of hiragana and 46 characters of katakana; introduction of some of the kanji.
