Outline Description of Module

This post A-level module offers a balanced syllabus of grammar and essential communication skills (spoken and written) for everyday use of French language. This module is designed for students who have an A-level or equivalent in French (including French language C and D, CE1093 and CE1094). The emphasis is on reinforcing main grammar points studied previously and extending vocabulary. The course is entirely conducted in French and is supported with authentic materials.

METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops ii) Self study including use of digital language laboratory and Learning Central.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 20% ii) Reading comprehension 20% iii) Oral assessment 30% iv) Aural end test 30%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to

  • Participate in a (simulated) meeting in French presenting a particular case or opinion
  • Read authentic documents in French; act upon these as required in English: includes the skills of summarising  translation, responding to spoken or written questions about the document
  • Listen to and/or view authentic documents in French (eg radio or television broadcasts) for the purposes of gist or detailed comprehension
  • Conduct an uncomplicated telephone conversation in French

How the module will be delivered

This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks and is conducted in French.

Skills that will be practised and developed

Intellectual Skills                       -    integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.

 Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:

  1. demonstrate their ability to express themselves fluently and maintain a lengthy conversation in the target language on a wide range of topics.
  2. demonstrate their ability to construct a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects , expressing points of view at some length.
  3. demonstrate their ability to understand long and complex factual and literary texts, appreciating a certain distinction of style.
  4. understand extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly. 

Employability Skills:      - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,

                                            - to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies
