Outline Description of Module
This module is designed for students who have completed a GCSE in French or equivalent, or who have completed French Language C (CE1093), and who have maintained their language skills either by a stay in a French-speaking country or by a course of study. The focus of this module is upon the applied use of the language in work or study. The course provides an introduction to the language of business in French. At the end of this module, students should be able to sit one of the DELF examinations (held every June at the Centre). Students with an 'A' level in French are not permitted to take this module.
METHODS OF TEACHING: i) Weekly two-hour workshops ii) Self study including use of digital language laboratory and Learning Central.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: i) Coursework 20% ii) Reading comprehension 20% iii) Oral assessment 30% iv) Aural end test 30%.

On completion of the module a student should be able to
- Make an oral presentation to a group of peers on an appropriate topic
- Read and, with the help of a dictionary, comprehend passages of written French from authentic sources
- Summarise in English, in speech or in writing, passages of written French
- Initiate a telephone conversation in French
- Show awareness of the formulae used in business correspondence and translate or summarise examples of standard correspondence
- Transcribe a passage of spoken French
How the module will be delivered
This module will be taught in small groups to encourage interaction. The emphasis will be on communication. The module is taught over 12 weeks
Skills that will be practised and developed
Intellectual Skills - integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study.
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in everyday situations,
- demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions,
- collect information from short texts in the target language.
Employability Skills: - to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group,
- to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies
