Outline Description of Module
This is a course designed for students who have no prior knowledge of Chinese language. The focus of the course is on situational conversations and the aim is to equip students with very basic language skills and some cultural understanding. Students will learn some language structures, Chinese Pinyin and up to 150 characters.
At the end of the course, students should be able to sit the HSK (Level1) examinations

How the module will be delivered
The course includes diverse teaching methods such asmulti-media PowerPoint presentations,video watching, etc. Students will actively participate in role-substitution, interactive exercises, group discussions and other interactive language exercises.
48contact hours – interactive language work-shops.
Skills that will be practised and developed
Intellectual Skills:
- integrate information provided in taught sessions and private study,
Discipline Specific (including practical) Skills:
- demonstrate their ability to understand simple instructions and respond appropriately in everyday situations;
- demonstrate their ability to communicate in spoken and written form by using essential vocabulary and expressions as well as Chinese Pinyin;
- collect information from short texts in the target language.
Transferable Skills:
- to be responsive to the discipline of working with others as part of a group;
- to understand and reflect upon different cultures and societies.
How the module will be assessed
Written class test (40%) and course work (20%): to test students’ ability to understand simple texts, produce written responses and translate simple sentences.
Oral continuous assessment (20%): to test students’ ability to produce oral dialogues in Chinese Aural class test (20%) to test students’ comprehension of spoken Mandarin on familiar everyday social,work and study situations.

Syllabus content
At least 10 lessons will be selected from following contents:
Lesson 1: Hello;
Lesson 2: What time is it now;
Lesson 3: How much does the sweater cost;
Lesson 4: I'd like a fried diced chicken with peanuts;
Lesson 5: What do you do;
Lesson 6: Is Jenny in;
Lesson 7: Go straight ahead;
Lesson 8: Where is your new house;
Lesson 9: What's the matter with you;
Lesson 10: Can you repair a computer:
Lesson 11: It's too cold;
Lesson 12: Please clean the table.
The course also covers the following basic knowledge about the Chinese language:
1.Chinese Pinyin (the Chinese Phonetic system---- Initials,finalsandtones)
2. Basic grammar (word order, common sentence patterns, general questions and negative sentences)
3. Chinese characters (basic strokes, rules of stroke order)
4. Major differences between Chinese and English in expression
